Prey (Extended version from the first published in 2022)
Prey is a story that blends the local chronicles recording the history and folklore of Mae Sot, the writer’s hometown in Tak Province, Northern Thailand. Written in the style of magic realism, this novel tells the story of a love triangle and a murder for which no perpetrator can be found. The novel explores the interactions between a 40-year-old woman, who is the main character, and a cast of siblings, aunts and nephews, and a handsome young student pursuing research for a master-degree thesis on “Intermarriage between citizens of Mae Sot and the Japanese during World War II.” It is while the young man is doing his research that the murder occurs and the reader must begin the hunt for the perpetrator. Everyone involved describes events as they took place from their own perspectives. But whose story is the more reliable? Was the murderer human, or was this indeed the work of a ghostly spirit behind a mask?”
